What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin, durable shells (typically 0.3-0.5 mm thick) that are bonded to your natural teeth to improve their appearance. They can address various cosmetic concerns, such as elongating teeth, covering chips or stains, and enhancing the overall aesthetics of your smile. Veneers can also serve as an alternative to braces by being applied over crooked teeth and closing natural gaps.
Despite their thinness, porcelain veneers are securely bonded to your teeth, making them strong enough to endure daily wear and tear. With proper care, they can last 15-20 years or even longer. Porcelain is more resistant to staining than natural enamel, and its durability allows it to maintain both its strength and appearance over time. If you’re aiming for a brighter smile, Dr. Vargas may recommend whitening your teeth before applying veneers, ensuring a consistent, radiant color across all your teeth.
Why Choose Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are meticulously crafted to mimic the natural translucence and subtle color variations of real teeth. When designed by an experienced cosmetic dentist, they blend so seamlessly that distinguishing them from natural teeth is nearly impossible. Since cosmetic dentistry goes beyond typical dental school training, experts like Dr. Lopez have completed advanced post-graduate education to specialize in this field. A skilled cosmetic dentist will work with you to create a smile that aligns with your vision, focusing on details such as shape, symmetry, and shade to ensure your results are both beautiful and natural-looking.
How Porcelain Veneers Are Designed and Placed?
During your smile design consultation at our office, Dr. Lopez will take the time to understand your specific goals—whether it's the color, shape, or overall look you envision for your new smile. If you have a photo of a smile you admire, feel free to bring it along for inspiration.
To achieve the most natural-looking results, a small amount of enamel is typically removed from the surface of your teeth to make space for the veneers. However, depending on the shape of your teeth and your desired outcome, veneers can sometimes be placed with little to no preparation.
We then take precise digital impressions of your teeth using an advanced optical scanner—no messy molds needed. These impressions are sent to our trusted dental lab, where your custom veneers are created for an impeccable fit. While your permanent veneers are being crafted, you’ll be fitted with temporary ones, allowing you to preview your new smile.
In about 1–3 weeks, your final veneers—handcrafted by our expert ceramist—will be ready. During your placement appointment, we’ll try them on to ensure they look and feel just right. Once you're completely satisfied with the results, Dr. Lopez will securely bond the veneers in place.
We also offer ultra-thin veneers like Lumineers, which are often marketed as “no-prep” options. These are even thinner than traditional veneers (around 0.3 mm) and can usually be applied directly over your natural teeth with minimal or no reshaping.
